Hellas Greek Restaurant, Tarpon Springs Florida

Spoiler alert: Hellas Restaurant in Tarpon Springs Florida is exceptional. Located in the heart of the sponge docks, this iconic Greek historical location, the home of the famous sponge docks, dates back decades. Want some historical perspective, then find the 1953 Robert Wagner movie “Beneath the twelve mile reef.”

THE GOOD:  Location, location, location. You could make a day of visiting the sponge docks, shops and attractions of this tiny Greek hamlet. Get there early so you don’t have to compete with the crowds.

If you love Saganaki (flaming cheese) you will love Hellas. Most Greek restaurants offer this table side appetizer and Hellas is as good as it gets. Don’t forget to yell “Opa.”

Lamb shank served with spaghetti in a light tomato sauce. Let’s face it, most people order gyros when they go to a Greek restaurant simply because of a lack of adventure of fabulous cuisine. Break out of your shell and order a specialty dish such as lamb, a Greek staple. We did and it was exquisite. Perfectly prepared and so moist we ate it with a fork as it flaked off the bone.

The gyro platter featured a large helping of gyros (lamb and beef mixture broiled on a spit).  It was served over rice, potato wedge, sliced tomatoes, green beans and Tzatziki (Greek yogurt dip) sauce.  There was enough on the plate to make three meals.

The Greek salad was also hit. Served traditional style with potato salad it was so much better than the salads served at a standard restaurants where you get a bowl of greens with Greek dressing. This was the real deal.

Service was super friendly, attentive and informative. Our server, Tripp, said that he has been with Hellas for seven years and his commitment to Hellas shows. He was knowledgeable about their dishes and how Greek restaurants in other cities compared.
